Cutting Back Without Cutting Down
Tree trimming and pruning is how most trees in Columbus stay in the yard. A big oak that drops limbs on the carport, a pine brushing the gutters or a magnolia swallowing the front walk can usually be fixed with the right cuts instead of a chainsaw at the base. Good pruning takes out what is dead or failing, reduces weight on long limbs and opens space over the roof, while leaving enough live crown for the tree to keep feeding itself through a Georgia summer.
How the cuts are made
The industry standard for pruning in the United States is ANSI A300, and the guidance built on it is simple: cut back to a branch or the trunk at the branch collar, don't leave stubs, and don't take off more live wood than the tree can spare. Those cuts seal over. Topping, which means cutting the main stems back to stubs, does the opposite. The tree pushes out a crowd of weakly attached sprouts, the stubs decay, and in a few years the crown is heavier and less stable than before. We don't top trees.
The common jobs in Columbus
Most pruning calls here fall into a few groups. Deadwood removal on mature water oaks and laurel oaks, which shed dead limbs as they age. Clearance pruning to lift limbs off the roof, the driveway and the street. Thinning on dense crowns to cut wind load before summer storms. Pine work, mostly taking out dead lower limbs and anything hanging over the house. And crape myrtles, which are far too often cut back hard every winter; done right, they only need crossing and rubbing branches and old seed heads taken out.
Timing and storms
Columbus gets its heaviest rain in March and August, and summer thunderstorms bring sudden wind. Pruning before those seasons, when weak limbs can be found and shortened, prevents a lot of storm calls. Light deadwood work can be done any time of year. For bigger structural cuts on hardwoods, late winter is often a good time because the tree is dormant and the structure is easy to see.
Street trees and wires
The city prunes its own trees between the sidewalk and street where that strip is city property, so those are a 311 request rather than a job for us. Limbs near power lines are regulated work: Georgia 811 requires at least 72 hours' notice before work in the vicinity of overhead high-voltage lines, and limbs on the service line to your house may need the utility involved. We tell you on the quote what we can and can't cut.
Pruning Work We Do
Each pruning quote names the type of work and the trees it covers.
Deadwood removal
Dead and dying limbs taken out of the crown before they drop on roofs, cars or people.
Crown thinning
Selected limbs removed to cut weight and wind resistance while keeping the tree's shape.
Clearance pruning
Limbs lifted or shortened over roofs, driveways, sidewalks and the street.
Pine limbing
Dead lower limbs and branches over the house removed from tall pines.
Young tree and ornamental pruning
Structure set on young oaks and maples, and crape myrtles shaped without topping.

Tree Trimming & Pruning Questions
How often should trees in Columbus be pruned?
Mature shade trees usually need attention every three to five years, sooner if they are dropping dead limbs or hang over the house. Young trees benefit from light structural pruning more often. Pines need little routine pruning beyond removing dead limbs and anything over the roof.
Should I top my crape myrtle?
No. Hard cutting back every winter leaves knobby stubs that sprout thin, weak branches. Removing crossing branches, suckers and old seed heads keeps the natural shape, and if a crape myrtle is simply too big for its spot, a different plant may be the better answer.
Can you trim the limbs over my power line?
It depends on the line. Work in the vicinity of overhead high-voltage lines requires at least 72 hours' notice to Georgia 811, and some limbs are the utility's to handle. We will tell you at the estimate which limbs we can take and which need the utility.
Will pruning keep my oak from falling in a storm?
Pruning lowers the risk by removing dead wood and taking weight off long limbs, but it can't fix decay in the trunk or roots. If we see signs of internal decay, we tell you and talk through removal or monitoring.
When is the best time to prune in Columbus?
Deadwood can come out any time. Larger structural pruning on hardwoods is often done in late winter, before spring growth and before the summer storm season.
