An Old Town East of Columbus

Tree Service in Talbotton means old trees on old lots. Talbotton was founded in 1828 as the seat of the new Talbot County, both named for Governor Matthew Talbot, and it is one of the older towns in our area. It is small now, with 742 residents in 2020 on about 3.1 square miles at roughly 732 feet, but the shade trees around its older homes and churches have had close to two centuries of town life around them. The Straus family, who later bought R. H. Macy and Company in New York, got their start in retail here in the 1800s.

When the tornado reached town

On March 3, 2019, the tornado that tore through Beauregard and Smiths Station in Alabama kept going for more than 68 miles. After crossing Muscogee and Harris counties it entered Talbot County, struck Baughville, and regained low-end EF3 strength as it hit the north side of Talbotton, causing major damage to buildings and trees. Many of the trees that people lost were the big old ones that had shaded the town for generations.

What is left standing

Trees that survived a storm like that can carry problems that grow slowly: cracked unions, torn bark that lets decay in, and roots that were loosened when the trunk rocked. In a town where so many owners are older, those slow problems are easy to put off. Talbot County's population is one of the oldest in our area, with 29.4 percent of residents 65 or older, and about 79.6 percent of homes are owner-occupied. We hear from a lot of longtime owners who simply cannot climb a ladder or haul limbs anymore and want someone to take care of the trees properly.

How we work in Talbotton

  • Start with the trees over the house, the bedrooms and the driveway
  • Separate what is urgent from what can wait a season
  • Price each tree and each task on its own line
  • Agree on what happens to the wood: chipped, hauled, or cut for firewood
  • Rake and blow the yard clean before we leave

Burning, chipping and the county line

Talbot County is not among the 54 Georgia counties under the EPD summer burn ban, according to the Georgia Forestry Commission's list, and hand-piled natural yard debris no longer needs a GFC permit. The safety rules still apply, including distance from woods and buildings and staying with the fire. In town, check local rules before burning.

Power lines

Flint Energies lists Talbot County in its service area and says it trims along its primary right-of-way and along service drops on member property. If you are on a Flint line and a limb is rubbing the line to your house, call them. We handle the rest of the tree.

Old trees worth keeping

Not every old tree needs to come down. A sound oak with deadwood and a few heavy limbs can often be cleaned and lightened and stay for many more years. We will tell you plainly whether we think a tree is worth keeping.

Talbotton Questions

Is Talbotton too far out for a Columbus tree company?

No. Talbotton is part of our regular area east of Columbus. We schedule visits there and in the rest of Talbot County on a regular basis.

My father's trees have not been touched in years. Where do we start?

Start with anything dead or broken over the house and driveway. We walk the property, rank the trees by risk and give you a written estimate so you can do the urgent work first.

Do you still see damage from the 2019 tornado?

Sometimes. Cracks and decay from storm wounds can take years to show. If a big tree near your house came through that storm, it is worth a look.

Can you cut the wood for firewood instead of hauling it?

Yes. Many owners here heat with wood or give it to neighbors. Tell us the length you want.
