Country Lots With a Columbus Address
Tree Service in Upatoi is a different job than tree work in MidTown, even though both are in Columbus. Upatoi is an old community in northeastern Muscogee County, about 15 miles east of downtown along Georgia 22 and U.S. 80. It had its own post office from 1829, and the city annexed it with the rest of the county at consolidation in 1971. The Norfolk Southern line marks its southern edge and the northern boundary of Fort Benning, and Upatoi Creek runs a few miles farther south along the county line.
What you see out here are pines, hardwood edges along the creeks and houses set back on bigger tracts. Most of our Upatoi calls are about one of three things: a pine that died and is now a problem, a wooded edge that has crept toward the house, or a pile of stumps left from someone else's clearing.
When a pine dies, look at the neighbors
One dead pine is often just one dead pine. Several dying in a cluster is a pattern worth understanding before you cut anything else. The Georgia Forestry Commission reports Heterobasidion root disease in pine stands along or south of the Fall Line between Augusta and Columbus, mostly on sandy to sandy loam soils. The fungus enters through fresh stump surfaces after thinning, travels down the roots and moves to nearby trees through root contact. Symptoms such as thin crowns and short, yellowing needles tend to appear three to five years after a thinning, and badly rotted trees can blow over in wind. The GFC adds that bark beetles often finish off trees that the root disease has already weakened.
So if your back acre was thinned a few years ago and the pines near the stumps are fading, tell us. We will look at the pattern, not just the tree you called about, and we may suggest you talk with a GFC forester before deciding on wider cutting.
Clearing along the edges
Many Upatoi owners want a defensible strip between the woods and the house: dead pines out, low limbs raised, volunteer sweetgums and water oaks removed before they get big. That kind of work is cheaper done once, carefully, than piecemeal every time a storm breaks something.
Wood disposal on bigger tracts
Inside Columbus, whole trees cut on private property are not part of normal curbside collection; the city sells a separate Tree For Fee pickup. On rural lots, owners often keep logs for firewood and chips for paths. We can leave the wood cut to length, stack it where you want it, or haul everything off.
Typical work
- Dead and dying pine removal, including leaners over driveways
- Creek-edge hardwood pruning and hazard removal
- Edge clearing and canopy raising near homes and outbuildings
- Stump grinding for pasture, lawn or a new building pad

Upatoi Facts
- Old community, city address. Upatoi lies about 15 miles east of downtown Columbus on GA 22 and U.S. 80; its post office opened in 1829, and it became part of the city of Columbus at the 1971 city-county consolidation.
- Fort Benning boundary. The Norfolk Southern Railway marks Upatoi's southern boundary and the northern boundary of Fort Benning, and Upatoi Creek, about three miles south, forms Muscogee County's southern line.
- Root disease below the Fall Line. The Georgia Forestry Commission reports Heterobasidion root disease in pine stands along or south of the Fall Line from Augusta to Columbus, typically showing 3-5 years after thinning on sandy soils.
- Whole trees are a paid pickup. Columbus does not collect whole trees cut on private property in regular service; its Tree For Fee pickup costs $50 per load plus $76.50 per ton in tipping fees.

Upatoi Questions
Several pines on my Upatoi land are dying at once. Is it beetles?
It may be, but beetles often follow another problem. In this area the GFC flags root disease in thinned pine stands on sandy soil. We look at the whole group, the stumps nearby and the bark before suggesting what to cut.
Can you leave the logs for firewood?
Yes. Tell us the length you want, and we will cut and stack the wood where you choose. The estimate will show the price with and without hauling.
Do you work near the Fort Benning line?
We work on private property right up to the boundary. We do not cut trees on federal land, so anything across the line is a question for the installation.
Can you grind stumps left by a logging or clearing job?
Yes. We grind stumps for lawns, pastures and building pads. Tell us how many and how big, and whether rocks or metal may be buried in them.
