Hills, Old Canopy and New Houses
Tree Service in Green Island Hills covers some of the most varied lots in Columbus. This north-side neighborhood stretches along River Road, with Cascade Road, Mountainbrook Drive, Standing Boy Road and Winding Ridge Road threading through it. Homes range from the 1960s to brand new, in Georgian, Tudor, Spanish Revival and Craftsman styles, and developers keep building here, with new homes often priced at $400,000 and up. That mix creates two very different kinds of tree calls.
Call type one: the established yard
On older lots the trees have had fifty or sixty years to grow over roofs, decks and pools. North Columbus sits above the Fall Line, where the ground rolls instead of lying flat, so many of these trees are on slopes. A big oak on the high side of a lot leans its weight toward the house below. Our work there is usually:
- End-weight reduction on long limbs over the roof
- Deadwood removal before it falls on a patio or pool screen
- Clearance from chimneys and gutters
- Inspection of the root flare where retaining walls or driveways have cut roots
Call type two: the new build next door
Construction stresses trees that it does not kill outright. Trenching, grade changes and heavy equipment parked over roots can show up two or three years later as thinning crowns or dead tops. If a house went up beside your lot and your tree has looked worse since, the cause may be on the other side of the property line. Pines are particularly prone to follow-up attacks; the Georgia Forestry Commission says Ips and black turpentine beetles are drawn to pines stressed by mechanical injury, drought or storm damage.
Easements and curbside trees
Hillside lots often carry drainage and utility easements. Columbus is clear that easements are private property, so a dead tree on one is the owner's to remove. Trees in a city-owned strip between sidewalk and street are the city's, and residents may not cut them or hire a contractor to; those go to 311. We will not take down a tree that belongs to the city.
After the cut
Columbus will not collect limbs longer than four feet or thicker than six inches at the curb, and city ordinance requires contractors to remove the waste they generate. On our jobs, chipping and hauling are written into the estimate, so the street stays clear.
Stumps on a slope
Grinding a stump on a hillside takes more care than on flat ground; the grinder has to sit level and grindings can wash downhill in the next rain. We backfill and rake the spot so it can be seeded or planted.

- Main streets. River Road is the neighborhood's main north-south street, and Cascade Road and Mountainbrook Drive are the main east-west streets, with Standing Boy and Winding Ridge Roads as arterials.
- Rolling north side. North Columbus lies on the hilly side of the Fall Line, while the city's south side is flat plains.

Green Island Hills Questions
A house is being built next door. Can I protect my tree?
The best protection is keeping equipment, fill and trenching out of the root zone, which usually extends well past the branch tips. Talk with the builder early. Afterward, watch for thinning or dead tops over the next few seasons and have it checked.
My oak is above a retaining wall. Is it at risk?
Walls often cut roots on one side, so the tree relies more on the uphill roots. Signs to look for are cracking soil, leaning or a wall that has started to bulge. We look at the root flare and the wall during the visit.
Do you handle tree trimming for whole streets or HOAs here?
Yes, we can quote several neighboring lots together, with a separate written line for each property.
What can I plant near the street that will not end up in the power lines?
Columbus's own Urban Forestry crews plant smaller species such as hornbeam, holly, serviceberry and fringe tree where space is tight and overhead lines are present, and save oaks, maples and elms for open spots. That is a sensible guide for a private yard too.
