Small Lots, No Room for Mistakes

Tree Service in Bibb City is precision work. This former company town of the Bibb Manufacturing Company was packed onto a tiny footprint on the east bank of the Chattahoochee in north Columbus, around a mill that was once described as the largest cotton mill in the United States. In 2000 the census counted 510 people on roughly a sixth of a square mile, a density of about 3,065 per square mile. Houses sit close together, so a tree in one yard almost always overhangs a neighbor's roof, fence or car.

A short history that explains the trees

Bibb City was incorporated in 1909 and run by the mill company. The mill closed in 1998, and the town gave up its charter on December 7, 2000, after which it became part of the consolidated Columbus government. The Bibb City Historic District, about 48 acres built around 1900 with Classical Revival and Craftsman houses, was listed on the National Register on February 14, 2010. Trees planted around those mill houses in the early and middle 20th century are now very large for the lots they stand on.

How we take a tree down on a lot this size

Felling a whole tree is rarely an option here. A typical removal goes like this: 1. Walk the lot and the neighbors' sides with you, noting roofs, lines, fences and cars 2. Climb or use an aerial lift where access allows, and remove small limbs first 3. Rig larger limbs on ropes and lower them to a clear landing spot 4. Take the trunk down in short sections, sized to what the ground and rigging can handle 5. Chip on the street side and rake the yard

It is slower than open-yard work, and the estimate reflects that, but it keeps the job off your neighbor's porch.

Pruning instead of removing

Many Bibb City trees do not need to come down. A big oak can often be reduced away from a roof and cleared of deadwood without hurting its health, using reduction cuts back to strong laterals under ANSI A300 practice. That keeps shade on houses that were built before air conditioning and holds the look of the district.

City rules still apply

Because Bibb City is now Columbus, the city's right-of-way rules apply. Trees in a strip between sidewalk and street are maintained by the city when that strip is city property, and residents may not cut a city-owned tree or hire someone else to do it; those requests go to 311. On a cramped block it is easy to assume a curbside tree is yours. We check before we quote.

The river side

The historic district is bounded on one side by the Chattahoochee. Trees on the river bluff often lean out toward the light over the water. Those are slow, careful jobs where we plan every cut around the slope.

Bibb City Questions

My neighbor's tree hangs over my mill house. What can I do?

Talk with your neighbor first. Columbus says it does not order private trees removed unless they threaten the right-of-way or public, and for a tree threatening your home it suggests a written notice to the neighbor. If both of you agree, we can quote pruning or removal from either yard.

Can a large tree be removed without a crane on such a small lot?

Often yes, by climbing and lowering it in sections. Sometimes a crane is the safer choice when a tree is dead or leaning over a house. We explain which approach fits after looking at it.

Will heavy pruning harm an old tree?

Removing too much live canopy at once does stress trees. We keep live-wood removal moderate and focus on deadwood and targeted reduction, which is easier on an older tree.
