The Pines That Shade Half of Columbus
Pine tree removal is its own kind of job in Columbus. Loblolly and other southern pines grow tall and straight on both sides of the Fall Line, often 70 feet or more, and in many neighborhoods they were left standing when houses were built around them. That leaves a lot of tall, top-heavy trees within striking distance of roofs. Most are healthy and can stay. The ones that need to come out are pines under attack by bark beetles, pines hit by lightning, pines with a fresh lean or root damage, and pines that have simply grown too big for a small lot.
Bark beetles: what to look for
The Georgia Forestry Commission describes three beetles that attack pines in the state. Southern pine beetle is the most destructive and can kill large numbers of healthy trees in a short time; attacks usually start well up the trunk. Ips engraver beetles go after pines stressed by drought, storms or injury, often a few trees at a time. Black turpentine beetle works the lower 12 feet of the trunk and leaves larger, often purplish pitch tubes. The common signs are dime-sized blobs of white to yellow resin on the bark, brown boring dust in the crevices and green needles on the ground. Badly stressed trees may not make pitch tubes at all.
Why timing matters
The Forestry Commission's advice is to promptly salvage or destroy severely damaged pines so they don't become breeding material, and it does not recommend chemical control for southern pine beetle or Ips in forest settings. A pine that has been killed by beetles also dries out and gets brittle, which makes climbing and rigging it harder and less predictable. Taking a dying pine down while the wood is still sound is usually simpler, safer and cheaper than waiting until it is a standing dead snag.
How tall pines come down
On an open lot with room to fall, a pine can sometimes be felled whole. Around houses, it is climbed or reached with a lift and taken down from the top in sections, with pieces lowered on ropes so they don't bounce into the roof or fence. Pines have long, straight trunks and few large limbs, so the work is mostly about controlling heavy trunk sections. Lightning-struck pines get extra caution, because the strike can crack the wood internally in ways that don't show from the ground.
Lightning and storms
Pines are often the tallest thing in the yard, which makes them common lightning targets. A strike may leave a long strip of bark peeled down the trunk. Some struck pines survive; many die within months, and the Forestry Commission lists lightning damage among the injuries that make pines targets for beetles. We look at struck trees and tell you whether removal or waiting makes sense.

How Pine Removal Works
1. Inspect the pine
We look for pitch tubes, boring dust, lightning scars, lean and root damage.
2. Quote in writing
The method, cleanup and price, and whether nearby pines should be watched.
3. Take it down
Felled whole where there is room, sectioned and lowered where there isn't.
4. Haul the wood
Logs and brush removed so infested wood doesn't stay on the property.

Pine Tree Removal Questions
Can a pine with pine beetles be saved?
Usually not once southern pine beetle or Ips have mass-attacked it. The Georgia Forestry Commission does not recommend chemical control for those beetles in forest settings and advises salvaging badly damaged pines promptly. Black turpentine beetle, which attacks the base, can sometimes be treated with an approved insecticide.
Will beetles spread from my neighbor's dead pine to mine?
They can. Southern pine beetle in particular can move from tree to tree and kill groups of pines. If a neighbor's pine is dying, it is worth checking your nearby pines for pitch tubes and dust.
Is a tall pine near my house dangerous?
Not by itself. Healthy pines with a straight trunk and sound roots stand through most storms. Warning signs are a new lean, cracks, root damage, lightning scars, beetle signs and a thinning or browning crown.
Can I keep the pine logs for firewood?
You can, but beetle-infested wood is better hauled away from your other pines. Pine also burns with more resin and soot than seasoned hardwood. We can leave clean logs if you want them.
Do you remove pines on large wooded lots?
Yes. On bigger lots in north Columbus, Midland and Harris County we thin crowded pines and take out dead ones, and we can quote that work by the tree or by the area.
