Ellerslie After the 2019 Storm
Tree Service in Ellerslie often begins with a look back at March 3, 2019. That afternoon the long-track tornado that started in Lee County, Alabama crossed into Harris County and passed just south of Ellerslie, running roughly parallel to Georgia 315 before continuing into Talbot County. In Ellerslie itself it downed trees and damaged some roofs, with no injuries or deaths. Some of the trees that survived took damage you cannot see from the ground.
Hidden storm damage
Trees that ride out a strong wind are not always fine. Years later we still find:
- Cracks in large limbs that have slowly opened
- Decay moving in through old broken branch stubs
- Root plates that shifted and never fully re-anchored
- Tops that snapped and resprouted with weakly attached new leaders
None of that means the tree must come down. It does mean a tree that went through 2019 near the track is worth an inspection, especially if it stands over the house or the drive.
The place
Ellerslie is an unincorporated community and, since the 2020 census, a census-designated place. That count found 1,053 residents in 397 households, with 407 housing units and a median age of 43.4. It sits along U.S. 27 Alternate and Georgia 85 at about 720 to 730 feet, a few miles north of the Fall Line, about 18 miles from Columbus and 5 miles northeast of Waverly Hall. The community and its post office date to 1828, and the name is believed to come from a character in Sir Walter Scott's Waverley novels.
North of the Fall Line
The Fall Line is the edge where the hilly Piedmont meets the flatter, sandier Coastal Plain. Ellerslie is on the Piedmont side, with heavier soils and rolling ground. Hardwoods such as oaks and hickories do well here, mixed with pines on old fields. Soils that hold more clay can stay saturated after long rains, and that is when shallow-rooted trees are most likely to tip.
What we do in Ellerslie
Most of our work here is ordinary residential tree care: pruning shade trees over homes, removing dead pines, grinding stumps, and clearing limbs after summer storms. We give a written estimate before any work, itemized so you can choose.
Disposal
Harris County is not on the list of 54 Georgia counties under the summer burn ban, and the GFC no longer requires a permit for hand-piled yard debris burned on the property where it grew. The usual safety distances still apply. We also chip and haul if you would rather not burn.

Ellerslie Questions
My trees survived the 2019 tornado. Should I still have them checked?
If they are big and near the house, yes. Storm cracks and broken stubs can let decay in, and it may take years to show. A free inspection tells you whether anything needs attention.
What is the Fall Line, and why does it matter for my trees?
It is the boundary between the hilly Piedmont and the sandier Coastal Plain. Ellerslie is on the Piedmont side, with heavier soils that can stay wet after long rains, which is when shallow-rooted trees are most likely to fall.
Can you give me a price over the phone?
We can give a rough idea from photos, but the written estimate after a visit is the price. Access, size and what the tree would hit change the cost a lot.
Which trees around Ellerslie tend to cause the most trouble?
Mature pines near houses and big water oaks are the most common calls we get in this part of Harris County. Pines that have lost neighbors to clearing catch more wind, and water oaks often carry decay inside before it shows outside. Hickories and white oaks tend to be sturdier, but any big tree with dead tops or cracks should be checked.
