Rebuilt in Brick, Shaded by Oaks
Tree Service in Buena Vista covers the in-town lots of the Marion County seat and the farms and woods around it. Buena Vista sits on a ridge within the Flint River watershed, at about 719 feet, where Georgia 26 and 41 cross. From here, Georgia 26 runs 16 miles west to Cusseta, which is our usual route out from Columbus. The town had 1,585 residents in the 2020 census, down from 2,173 in 2010.
A town that burned and came back
Buena Vista was settled in 1818, became the county seat in 1850 and was known as Pea Ridge before taking a name honoring Zachary Taylor's victory in the Mexican-American War. In 1906 a major fire destroyed much of the town, which was rebuilt in brick. That means many of the big trees near the town center grow beside brick walls, brick walks and brick foundations, which changes how we take them down. The Marion County Courthouse is on the National Register, and so is Pasaquan, the seven-acre compound created by artist Eddie Owens Martin.
Old trees near old brick
Working on a big tree beside an old brick building or house takes care. Limbs that drop even a few feet can crack mortar, gutters and slate. Roots under brick sidewalks and foundations are another issue; cutting them to fix a heaved walk can destabilize the tree. When we look at a tree like that, we talk through options: 1. Pruning to reduce weight and clear the roof, keeping the tree 2. Removing the tree in small, rigged sections lowered by rope 3. Grinding the stump shallowly near foundations and walks, to avoid disturbing the structure
We write up what we recommend and why, with each option priced.
Who owns the trees
Marion County is a county of homeowners and longtime residents. Census QuickFacts lists the owner-occupied rate at 78.9 percent and the share of residents 65 and older at 21.7 percent. Many of our calls come from owners who have lived with the same oaks and pecans for decades and want them cared for, not cleared.
Brush and burning
Marion County is not among the 54 counties on the Georgia Forestry Commission's summer burn ban list, and hand-piled natural yard debris no longer needs a GFC permit. The usual rules apply: 25 feet from woods, 50 feet from buildings, sunrise to sunset, and someone watching the fire. In town, check local rules first. We also chip and haul.

Flint Energies lists Marion County among the counties it serves and says it trims along primary right-of-way and member service drops. Call the utility about anything touching a line.

Buena Vista Questions
Roots from my oak are lifting the brick walk. Can you cut them?
Cutting large roots near the trunk can destabilize a tree and invite decay. We look at how big the roots are and how close to the trunk before suggesting anything. Sometimes rerouting or bridging the walk is better than cutting.
Do you work outside town in Marion County?
Yes. We cover the farms and homesites around Buena Vista as well as the town itself.
How do you protect a brick house when removing a tree beside it?
By taking the tree down in small pieces lowered on ropes, rather than dropping limbs. It takes longer, and the estimate reflects that.
Are old pecan trees worth pruning?
Often yes. Pecans drop limbs as they age, so removing dead and weak wood makes them safer over a house or yard. Heavy pruning all at once is not recommended.
Can I get an estimate without being home?
Yes. Point out the trees by phone or photo, and we will leave or email the written estimate.
