Living Among Big Woods

Tree Service in Pine Mountain deals with a lot more forest than most towns this size. Pine Mountain has about 1,216 residents and sits at roughly 922 feet at the northern base of the Pine Mountain Range. The town began in 1882 when the railroad arrived from Columbus and was called Chipley until 1958, when it took the name of the ridge because of Callaway Gardens. Next door is F.D. Roosevelt State Park, at 9,049 acres the largest state park in Georgia. Many homes here back up to woods that run for miles.

Storm history on the ridge

The woods around Pine Mountain have been hit hard more than once in recent years. During the 2011 Super Outbreak an EF2 tornado severely damaged FDR State Park, especially its campgrounds. On March 3, 2019, an EF1 tornado tracked about 7.5 miles across southern Pine Mountain; hundreds of trees fell, some of them onto houses. The lesson for homeowners is that wind damage here is less about one big tree and more about many trees at once. After a storm, the first job is usually opening the driveway and getting weight off the roof, then sorting through what is broken, hung up or leaning.

Before the next storm

A calm-weather visit is the best time to deal with risk. On a ridge-country lot we look at:

  • Dead or dying trees within one tree-length of the house
  • Trees with large dead tops or fungal conks on the trunk
  • Codominant stems and cracked unions on big hardwoods
  • Trees whose roots were cut by a driveway or septic line
  • Overhanging limbs on the windward side of the roof

A town in two counties, and two sets of burn rules

Most of Pine Mountain is in Harris County, but a small portion reaches into Meriwether County. That line matters for brush piles. The Georgia Forestry Commission's list of 54 counties under the EPD summer burn ban, which runs May 1 through September 30, includes Meriwether but not Harris. Hand-piled yard debris no longer needs a GFC permit, but outdoor burning in a ban county is restricted during those months. If you are not sure which side you are on, check before you light anything, or have us chip the brush.

Garden-country trees

Callaway Gardens, opened in 1952, grew from Cason Callaway's interest in the rare plumleaf azalea found growing in the area, and it is now known as the world's largest azalea garden. Plenty of local yards carry that tradition: azaleas, dogwoods and other understory plants under tall oaks and pines. When we prune or remove a big tree above a planted bed, we plan the drop zone and rigging to protect the shrubs underneath.

Pine Mountain Questions

Can I burn brush in Pine Mountain during the summer?

It depends on which county your lot is in. The Meriwether County side falls under the EPD summer burn ban from May 1 to September 30; the Harris County side does not. If in doubt, check with the GFC or have the brush chipped.

After a storm, what do you do first?

We start with anything on the house, blocking the driveway or hanging over where people walk. Once those are safe, we cut up what is down and come back to the trees that are damaged but standing.

My lot backs up to the state park. Can you remove trees on the line?

We work only on your side of the property line. A tree on park land is the park's, even if it leans toward your house; contact park staff about it.

Will removing a big tree hurt the azaleas underneath?

We plan rigging and landing spots to keep heavy wood out of planted beds. Some disturbance can happen, and we talk about it before the job so there are no surprises.
