Getting the Stump Out of the Way
Stump grinding takes what is left after a tree comes down and turns it into wood chips below the level of the lawn. A grinder with a toothed wheel works back and forth across the stump until it is gone to a few inches under the surface, then the hole is filled with the grindings and topsoil. In Columbus yards it is the most common way to deal with stumps from old pines and oaks, because it is fast, leaves the soil in place and doesn't need a backhoe.
Why not just leave it?
Some people do, and in a back corner of a wooded lot that is fine. In a lawn, a stump is something to mow around and trip over. Pine stumps can sit for years, and hardwood stumps often throw up sprouts. A decaying stump can also attract wood-feeding insects. If you plan to put down sod, pour a patio or plant something new where the tree stood, the stump has to go.
How deep and what is left
Most grinding goes about four to six inches below grade, which is enough for grass and new soil. If you plan to plant another tree or build in that spot, we can go deeper or grind out the larger surface roots too. The main roots below that depth are left to decay slowly in the ground. The grindings are a mix of wood chips and soil; you can keep them as mulch, use them to fill the hole, or have us haul the extra away.
Before we grind
A grinder digs into the ground, so underground lines matter. Georgia 811 asks residents to call before digging, and we check for irrigation lines, invisible dog fences and anything else buried near the stump. Access matters too. Smaller grinders fit through a standard backyard gate, which is common on Midtown and East Columbus lots fenced on all sides. On the flatter, sandier soils of south Columbus the grinding is usually quick; in north Columbus, rocky Piedmont ground around a stump can slow things down.
Disposal
Columbus does not collect stumps at the curb with regular yard waste. Pine Grove Landfill accepts stumps along with limbs and trees, and the city's Granite Bluff inert landfill stopped taking them in 2019. Grinding avoids the problem almost entirely, since the stump is turned into chips on the spot.

Stump Grinding Questions
How deep do you grind a stump?
Usually four to six inches below the ground, which is enough for grass or new topsoil. We can go deeper if you plan to plant or build in that spot.
Will the roots grow back?
Pine roots do not sprout after the stump is ground. Some hardwoods can send up shoots from roots for a season; pulling or cutting those a few times usually ends it.
Can you grind a stump from a tree another company cut down?
Yes. Old stumps, new stumps and stumps left from storm cleanup are all fine. Old, partly rotted stumps often grind faster.
What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?
Grinding turns the stump into chips in place and leaves the deep roots to decay. Full removal digs the whole stump and root ball out with a machine, which leaves a big hole and costs more. For most yards, grinding is enough.
Can a grinder get into my fenced backyard?
Usually. Smaller grinders fit through a standard gate opening. Measure your narrowest gate and tell us when you call.
